What Is Vastu Shastra?
Vastu Shastra (Sanskrit: ?????? ???????) is a traditional Indian system of architecture that describes principles of design, layout, space arrangement and spatial geometry. It aims to integrate architecture with nature and the cosmic energy of the five elements (Pancha Bhuta).
The Five Elements and Their Directions
- Earth (Prithvi) — South-West: stability, weight, grounding
- Water (Jal) — North-East: clarity, purity, flow of wealth
- Fire (Agni) — South-East: energy, metabolism, transformation
- Air (Vayu) — North-West: movement, communication, relationships
- Space (Akasha) — Centre: consciousness, openness, possibilities
7 Simple Vastu Changes You Can Make Today
1. Keep the North-East Corner Clean and Open
The North-East (Ishaan) is considered the zone of divine energy and wealth. Remove clutter, heavy furniture and toilets from this corner to allow positive energy to flow freely.
2. Position Your Main Entrance Correctly
The main door should ideally face North, East or North-East. Ensure it opens clockwise and is always well-lit and welcoming.
3. Kitchen in the South-East
The kitchen, representing the fire element, should be in the South-East corner. The cook should face East while cooking for best health outcomes.
4. Master Bedroom in the South-West
The South-West zone brings stability and strength. This is the ideal location for the master bedroom, with the head of the bed pointing South or East.
5. Use the Right Colours
Different zones call for different colours: creamy white and light yellow for the North-East, orange and pink for the South-East, blue and green for the North.
6. Remove Broken Objects Immediately
Broken mirrors, stopped clocks, cracked idols and dead plants all carry negative energy (Sha Qi). Remove or repair them promptly.
7. Place a Laughing Buddha Facing the Main Door
Position a Laughing Buddha (facing the entrance) at 2-3 feet height. This activates the welcoming of positive opportunities into your home.
